Volunteers needed!

Summer’s nearly here, and at Great St Mary’s we’re putting the finishing touches to our interactive touchscreens, planning exciting family activities and recruiting volunteers.

We need volunteers to help run our new heritage centre, welcome visitors, give guided tours and lead craft activities.

Our next taster meeting for potential volunteers will be from 5-6pm on Thursday 16 July.

You can read more information about the volunteering role here and fill out the volunteer application form here.

Please email Rosie at heritage@gsm.cam.ac.uk if you’d like to get involved!

Visit from Shirley School Year 4 students

King's BatWednesday saw a lovely visit from Shirley Community Primary School Year 4 classes.

We organised activities for them at King’s College Chapel with reflections on the Easter story in the stained glass windows and a trail to find some of the more unusual aspects of the Chapel, including this adorable little bat! king's sheet The pupils also explored GSM and discussed why Christians believe in baptism.

Some children had been to christenings themselves and, by comparing their own knowledge with quotes from scripture, pictures of baptisms from different Christian denominations, and paintings of Jesus’ baptism, they developed a rounded understanding of this sacrament.

I thought I’d share this brilliant drawing by one pupil – asked to draw something inspired by what they saw in GSM, they gave Jesus an enormous beard and apologised for “smushing” his face!sorry jesus for smushing your face
